'Transmission' means the transport of electricity on the extra high-voltage and high-voltage interconnected system with a view to its delivery to final customers or to distributors, but does not include supply (Article 2(3) of the Directive 2009/72/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 July 2009 concerning common rules for the internal market in electricity).

Directive (EU) 2019/944 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 June 2019 on common rules for the internal market for electricity and amending Directive 2012/27/EU in Article 2(34) includes the identical definition.

In contrast to the electricity supply, which is a competitive market, electricity transmission networks are natural monopolies, consequently, the respective tariffs are not determined by markets, but regulated.
