Market Identifier Code (MIC)
European Union Electricity Market Glossary

The rules for reporting derivatives contracts under the EMIR Regulation require that any trade booked over the regulated market has a valid Market Identifier Code (MIC).

Within the EMIR reporting standard the MIC is populated in the Venue of execution field (Table 2, field 15).

MIC Codes are defined by ISO 10383.

This standard identifies two sorts of MIC Code: ‘MIC’ and ‘Operating MIC’, also known as ‘Segment MIC’ and ‘Organisation MIC’ respectively.

According to ESMA clarifications, for EMIR reports Regulated Markets and MTFs should be identified by the relevant MIC Code as defined in the ESMA Register at http://reg-isters.esma.europa.eu/publication/.

Question 7 [Last update: 07/07/2017]

Which MIC should be used by trading venues for position reporting?

Venues should use the relevant ‘segment MIC’ under which a commodity derivative is traded. If a venue does not have a segment MIC, it should use its ‘operating MIC’.
